Basic Grammar

Study planner
Learning a language consists out of four components:
- Reading
- Writing
- Understanding
- Speaking
If you plan to study a language, you will have to work on all four components. But where to start? Should you first learn hundreds of vocabulary words, or should you first master the grammar? Should you read a lot, or focus on the spoken word?

For a part, this depends on your goals. What do you want to do with your Spanish? Do you want to go to Spain or the Americas and communicate with people? Or do you want to read books by Spanish authors in their original language?

Now comes the obvious: all these elements should be studied to get a full understanding of the language. If you want to have conversations in Spanish, it helps you to understand the grammar. Vocabulary you will need at all times, and will grow through listening and reading the language.

I therefore advice you to start by reading the basic grammar rules, so you will have an idea about how the language functions. You can then continue with taking a look at the basic vocabulary list, which will show you many words that are very similar to their English equivalents, and thus easy to learn. You can then continue with some of the games, which will give you a playful way to learn some more words and work on your grammar.

If you feel that you understand the basics of the language, and your vocabulary starts to grow, you can continue with the Advanced Spanish part of Spanish Labs.
